 Spirit of Remembrance is more than a special tour company. It takes the traveller beyond the battlefield, offering a forum for discussion and research as well as chance to travel with our uniquely qualified guides. These men and women have not only walked the battlefields – but have themselves served as soldiers in many of Britain's post-war conflicts. With this experience they bring a unique insight into the soldiers and terrain over which they fought.
Individual tours may be to visit the grave of a relative buried on a foreign battlefield. This can be a very intense and emotional experience and something that only close friends and family wish to share and we at Spirit of Remembrance respect this, offering tours for small groups or even individuals.
Old service comrades, history groups or simply friends may wish to visit the battlefields of Europe and beyond. These themed tours can take travellers to distant battlegrounds in the Far East or Africa, or as local as the RAF Fighter & Bomber Command airfields and coastal defences in southern England that were the front line in 1940.
For groups - of any size - from 10 to 500 (or more!) Spirit of Remembrance can provide a complete A to Z experience handling flights, accommodation, itineraries, guides, transport, restaurants and reunions, and even fully qualified doctors and/or nurses to accompany the group - covering any battlegrounds in the world to the fortifications of Britain, the Continent, Asia, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. The Spirit of Remembrance website allows travellers to compare and discuss tours and for those who wish to go into greater detail - to expand their knowledge of not only battles, but of the soldiers who were involved. When a tour ends many pilgrims and travellers wish to maintain contact with the group or follow up what they have discovered - or learned. For those who are researching their family histories – histories that in the 20th Century were almost inevitably touched by war - Spirit of Remembrance is a superb resource. The experience of the guides and researchers opens up new and exciting avenues of historical exploration.
Travel to the foreign fields that have for some become "forever home" can be physically and emotionally tiring. No one can guarantee good weather – as the history of war amply demonstrates. With this in mind Spirit of Remembrance will select only the best or most suitable mode of travel - be it train, boat, plane or coach, combined with original, comfortable quality hotel accommodation that provides an excellent base from which to tour. Working closely with national and local tourist organisations Spirit of Remembrance have also identified historic and unusual hotels, restaurants and guest houses that offer a high level of comfort and excellent traditional cuisine that they try to use to bring you even more value and history for your tour.
For example - you can dine in the Lion d'Ore hotel in Bayeux - the hotel that the Allied Forces radio and newspaper media took over soon after D-Day, or you can have a coffee in the Café Gondree at Pegasus Bridge and enter the first building in France to be liberated by glider born troops in the first minutes of D-Day. If visiting Dieppe you could enjoy a Calvados in the Hotel de la Terrace, at Vasterival and see the hotel where No 4 Commando set up its base in the raid on Dieppe in August 1942. France and Belgium are studded with historic chateaux and hotels/guest houses that have amazing historical significance in both the first and second world wars.
